Mars Lander Captures Haunting Sound of Martian Winds

Listen to Martian wind blow across NASAa

s InSight lander. The spacecrafta

s seismometer and air pressure sensor picked up tremors from 10 -1 5 mph( 16 -2 4 kph) gale as they blew across Marsa

Elysium Planitia on Dec. 1, 2018.

The seismometer readings are in the range of human hearing, but are nearly all bass and difficult to hear on laptop talkers and mobile machines. We render the original audio and a version pitched up by two octaves to construct them audible on mobile devices. Playback is recommended on a sound system with a subwoofer or through headphones. Reads from the air pressure sensor have been sped up by a factor of 100 periods to induce them audible. For full-length uncompressed. wav files, visit sounds
