CNN New Day [ Jan 31.2019] Shut Down Again BREAKING NEWS USA

free daughter arrest of Roger stone in Florida Stone was indicted on seven counts including obstruction of justice the mauler team believed that stone was a flight risk and worried he might destroy evidence but the president seems to think that he knows better than the FBI here he says when you have twenty nine people and you have armored vehicles and you’ve had all of the other you know many people know Roger is not a person that would they they would have to worry about from that standpoint meantime the Justice Department alleging a pro-russia Twitter account targeted the Muller investigation stealing and spreading non-public material from the special counsels team in an attempt to discredit the Muller Russia probe joining us now Joshua green national correspondent for Bloomberg Businessweek Jonathan Martin national political correspondent for The New York Times and Laura Jarrett CNN justice reporter there’s a lot going on in it even though it seems somewhat quiet January 31st there’s a lot going on one of the things that’s fascinating is we’re learning about this information that we know has now been we’ve been put out by these this pro-russia Twitter account is how they got it and Laura something that stood out to me and I brought this up to you during a break is it’s fascinating to me that they were pursuing this at all that they were fighting these charges against a number of people who were never going to be extra dated by Russia to face charges here so why go after them could it be simply that they wanted to get their hands on some information so maybe they could put it out absolutely and I think the Special Counsel team has hinted at that idea in filings before and even within the Justice Department bringing the charges against Concorde was seen as a little controversial I mean there were lawyers who thought maybe this should just be an unindicted co-conspirator because if you make them a formal defendant they are entitled to discovery just as they would be in any criminal case except in this case it’s a little bit different because the evidence is then going potentially into the hands of the Kremlin and something that this disinformation campaign like we’re seeing on Twitter as is something that has been uninterrupted even though people have been indicted and they’re facing serious charges they haven’t seen undeterred by all of that Josh green Russia is attacking the Russia investigation the president is in some way offering a defense or expressing sympathy for a target of this investigation Roger stone the president really parroting would have been conservative talking point suggesting that the FBI went in too hard when they arrested Roger stone in Florida what did you make of the president’s defense here when the president suggests that he might review the use of force here well I think it’s par for the course with how the president has responded throughout this investigation you know implying or often stating outright that he thinks something was unfair was done wrong shouldn’t have happened anything you can to kind of discredit and undermine that investigation we saw a lot of these same complaints when Paul manna forts house was raided by the FBI not least from Manta Ford himself saying why there need to be all these agents and you know this upset my family and my wife I think it’s a way of trying to cast some doubt on the integrity of the investigation with it with the hope that it might undermine a conclusion if that conclusion turns out to be negative for the president and we’re hearing Jonathan Martin we should point out we’re also hearing now from Lindsey Graham who wants you know wants to know more about exactly what the protocol is how things went down why it went down like this yeah I’ve got thinking the case of Senator Graham he obviously is facing a primary next year in South Carolina and I think he sort of made pretty clear that he wants to sort of side with the president when he can going forward I think that kind of explains that as far as the the president looks I think it sort of largely depends on who the target is right if it’s Manta Ford or stone who have indicated that they’re not going to cooperate with the feds and they’re not going to flip as the president often puts it then he tends to be more sympathetic if it’s folks like Cohen his former attorney who are cooperating with the feds then he doesn’t have a lot of sympathy for the sort of nature of their of their arrest or indictment then it’s you know it’s much more hostile so today and said that he was now going to cooperate with with with Muller do you think the president would have been really concerned about why he was you know woken up and a pre-dawn rate I don’t think so it’s interesting Laura obviously first of all the president doesn’t always express concern about the subjects of law enforcement right that’s the case when have we ever seen him outraged about law enforcement tactics except when it has to do with people who are convicted to Muller’s investigation even with Cohen remember originally he was outraged from Twitter saying who raids an attorney’s office even though there are Justice Department protocols that one can follow when you do perform such a search but he’s he’s only outraged selectively it again Lindsey Graham the the Judiciary Committee in the Senate is their job for oversight if he wants to ask the questions go ahead and ask yeah but what will the FBI tell him in terms of when they decide to use that type of posture I will say this is what we do every day that’s you know I will say this is what we do to protect our agents and I think there are fair questions to be raised about whether those are good tactics to be using in any case where there isn’t fear of violence but then those which should be raised in every case not just in the cases where it happens to be the president’s former advisors or lawyers or fixers or campaign chairman not picking and choosing yeah that’s an interesting it’s an interesting angle they’re looking at what else what else were learning there were some fascinating moments in this Daily Caller interview from the president not just about that but also in the way that he’s he’s even looking at the investigations you know talking about the resources being used for the Muller investigation versus the resources for example in the Las Vegas massacre in that investigation we should point out and he was asking some questions he’s answering them so he’s not just pulling this up on his own but just when you look at this it’s fascinating to see that this president still can so quickly you know move topics and just craft his own message to make it fit whatever he thinks will be most appealing in that moment yeah look that’s what Trump does I mean doesn’t in every subject but he does it especially in the Muller investigation and I think as I said before anything you can do to cap doubt on the integrity of that investigation he’s probably gonna push I mean the one thing from the Daily Caller interview that that stood out to me and surprised me a bit was Trump seemingly saying he’s going to let this this investigation continue he’s not going to interfere to me that showed uncharacteristic restraint since Trump generally doesn’t miss an opportunity to take a punch when one presents itself it’s interesting we should note that the president has said five days with no public schedule today we don’t know whether we will see in public but he’s made a whole bunch of statements online and that’s why I keep scrolling through here and Jonathan Martin there is one that is interesting to me and I feel as if Kelly and Conway may want to see this where the president says let’s just call them walls from now on and stop playing political games a wall is a wall now there is a bipartisan group of members of Congress trying to negotiate some kind of a deal to move forward on border security the president works so hard and Kellyanne Conway works so hard to stop calling it a wall call it a barrier call it steel slats but it’s not a wall and now this more the president like you know what never mind it’s a wall yeah I mean it’s the hundred and forty seventh time he sort of undercut his own advisors not terribly surprising in that sense it does speak to the sort of nature of his presidency the sort of stream of consciousness watching TV responding this is something he sees on TV and also this sort of fixation that but he has on getting this this wall which has become so self reinforcing but he sort of boxed himself in now and it’s gonna be hard for him to what do what he I think a lot of folks thought he would do last year John which is ultimately just declare victory somehow get some money for border security and declare victory call it the wall and most of the base would probably believe it was the wall if he sold it effectively but now I he’s gotten himself so wrapped up into this that he may actually have to get some kind of a wall to to call it a victory but he did both he did both of those things in simultaneous statements this morning Jonathan again let me read you what he wrote prior lose this to saying that the walls of all he said large sections of wall have already been built and much more either under construction or ready to go renovation of existing walls is all so a very big part of plaintiff finally after many decades properly secure our border the wall is getting done one way or the other so on the one hand he’s saying I’m already one he’s trying maybe they’re easier to retail and then he sort of beats himself up with the other hand and there’s a 180 yeah I mean there’s not a lot of consistency there that’s sort of hallmark of his calm strategy but now I mean this is the whole thing right is that Democrats and Republicans have supported physical barriers walls fences what-have-you on the border for years now and have spent billions of dollars appropriating money it’s not terribly controversial on a lot of parts of the border it’s been seen as effective in some places and to his point there there’s already war you know parts of the wall down there so yes this is something that from a PR standpoint he could certainly sell as a victory depending upon what he gets and you can get the photo ops down there on whatever new construction he gets appropriated but he just does seem to have created a dynamic where he’s worried about a critique for his conservative allies it’s not somehow seen as the wall and and you know we said we saw that red line that he drew yesterday before the meeting even started saying if you’re not talking about this basically it’s a non-starter you shouldn’t even be in there Josh you make the point in yeah just unique that you make the point though in a new piece about when we look at what the president has here is work you know there’s another shutdown that’s looming he actually has something else you know looming over him in terms of the arsenal this time around that’s right I mean one thing I laid out in the piece was that you know the shutdown could get worse next time if he were to attach a debt limit increase which is everybody’s worst nightmare well Lindsey Graham the the Robin to his Batman suggested that the other day so there are there are potentially bad outcomes here if Trump decides he isn’t satisfied with whatever Democrats are willing to agree and pushes us into another shutdown what’s the molar report coming Laura we don’t have this important wasn’t coming trust me when it comes I’ll come back I appreciate that we booked Laura for the morning of the malla report all right Jonathan Josh Laura great to have you here thanks so much thanks John millions of people across America waking up to historic brutally cold temperatures yet again this morning this polar plot shattering record lows all across the map it’s already being blamed as well for several deaths CNN’s Ryan young is live in Chicago off Lake Michigan where that is amazing Ryan behind you we just see the steam rising off the water it’s beautiful especially when we’re not out yeah absolutely you know absolutely we wanted to bring this shot to you we’re not protected by the building so I can tell you today feels colder than they did yesterday but to step out to show you guys something because this is unbelievable just to see this the water temperatures are warmer than the air temperature so that’s what creates this amount of steam that’s coming off here and you think about this Lake Michigan’s one the fifth biggest lakes in the area but look this is frozen cold the Midwest is really dealing with winters punch a brutal Arctic freeze sweeping over nearly a quarter of the country bringing the coldest air in a generation to parts of the Midwest it’s freezing cold my face my toes everything was a low temperature of negative 23 and a windchill of negative 52 the Windy City’s temperatures lower than parts of Antarctica and Alaska causing giant ice breaks to blanket the river and a wall of ice steam to form along Lake Michigan across the skyline the dangerously cold weather even showing its strength inside the steam froze around where the leaks are in my front door in Minnesota a windchill of 65 below zero these ultra marathoners crossing the finish line with their faces fully covered in ice police uniforms frozen completely upright to showcase the freezing cold residents in both Minnesota and Michigan asked to turn down their thermostats to conserve natural gas meanwhile snow squalls ripping through the North East bringing near whiteout conditions and winds of up to 30 miles per hour in New York and Philadelphia this time-lapse video showing the squall blowing through New York City lake effect snow creating Blizzard like conditions in upstate New York dropping two to three inches of snow per hour in Buffalo where temperatures dipped to negative 35 below zero near Rochester a 21 vehicle wreck bringing this highway to a standstill a snow squall also to blame for this 27 vehicle pileup near Reading Pennsylvania we couldn’t see anything because the snow is being driven first responders across the country forced to brave the treacherous conditions firefighters in Indiana covered in ice as they battled this house fire in negative 22 degree weather so you guys can see this now it looks like it’s even more traumatic the Sun is starting to rise of course we’re an hour behind you when you think about people skating outside for long periods of time they’re still warning about the potential for frostbite so you think about the folks who have been trapped outside especially even though how most people who live here in the city I can tell you one of the things I read in the Chicago Tribune this morning is some Good Samaritan decided to buy 70 hotel rooms last night for some of the homeless people throughout this area today now you have dozens of people who are showing up here around our location to take pictures of this because I’m sure they’ll be talking about this weather for quite some time all right good for those good Samaritans good for you Ryan they bring us that picture it is really stunning behind you thank you to you and your crew now go get warm so how cold is it exactly how long will it last CNN meteorologist Chad Meyers with the forecast well it’s record-breaking John I mean we know that the old record Chicago this morning was minus 12 or minus 21 right now but it feels much worse than that because the wind is blowing as well it feels like 34 below where he was just standing now later on tonight it’ll still feel like 11 below that’s 7 o’clock the warmest part of the day for Chicago around 6 o’clock Central time tomorrow not as cold 3 below will be the wind chill in Chicago there and then the warm air tries to get here and there’s going to every time we get brutally cold air we go from zero tomorrow and we try to warm up to 41 it doesn’t what happen doesn’t happen without consequences we are going to get humidity that’s going to go over this land the land and the roads are Blakely’s zero degrees six inches deep when you try to get rain on top of a road that’s below 32 you’re going to get an ice event ruff-ruff ice ice event probably Saturday morning into Saturday afternoon depending on when the rain finally gets to you up here so a little bit more salt in the wound if you don’t mind thanks for that we always like that all right Chad thank you very much so a number of candidates have jumped in to the Democratic race for president who was the announced candidate with the most Twitter followers you might be surprised we’re gonna talk to her next the race for 2020 is on the wide range of potential candidates includes several members of Congress a billionaire former Starbucks CEO and our next guest who is the one with the largest social media following of any declared candidate so far Marianne Williamson Democratic candidate for president best-selling author and activist Marianne thank you so much for being with us you are well-known to millions of people who have read your books including a return to love but some people who follow politics closely might not have seen you so I want them to get familiar with where you’re coming from politically you have said we have a problem with the psychological fabric of our country as a low-level emotional civil war has begun in too many ways to rip us apart in order to deal with that we must address it on the level of our internal being that’s on your campaign website so how exactly does a president address this we need a moral and spiritual awakening in this country and nothing short of that is adequate to really fundamentally change the patterns of our political dysfunction there are many things we need to discuss many things we need to name we have an economic and a moral economic system we need to discuss this we have millions of American children who living in chronic despair and trauma we need to discuss this we have systemic racism layers of systemic racism that are actually live layovers leftovers from slavery we need to discuss this and while we’re good at preparing for war we do not wage peace on the levels we need to we need to discuss this you know Franklin Roosevelt said that the administrative aspects of being president were secondary what really matters he says is moral leadership we need someone to articulate what’s really happening the deeper levels of our moral dysfunction I have had a 35-year career in naming and transforming those dynamics and I think that that’s my qualification for the presidency your campaign has a number of proposals already out there listed on your website some very specific you call for universal health care and medicare for all permanent make permanent the middle-class tax cut provide free higher education including free tuition for public colleges it was government support for children’s services establish a green new deal all of these in some cases sound like many of the policies for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party do you feel it’s necessary to come up with a way to pay for these all well that’s such a canard on this country anytime somebody wants to have a two trillion dollar tax cut or you give 83 cents of a dollar to the richest among us nobody’s supposed to ask how you’re going to pay for that anytime somebody wants to have a two trillion dollar war that turns out to be the biggest foreign policy blunder in our history nobody’s supposed to ask how are you going to pay for that the truth of the matter is every dollar that we invest in education is money we are investing in our economy if you really want a vibrant economic system 10 years from now 20 years from now you take care of your children today our current economic system does not lead to a vibrant economy it leaches when you have short-term profit maximization for huge corporations as your bottom line you’re allowing market forces to replace democracy as your organizing principle for your society you’re not building a strong economy and we need to name that see that for what it is it is propaganda that serves a veiled aristocratic system we want of course a vibrant economy in the United States what you do is unleash the creativity and the productivity of the American people you know it’s interesting again some of these policies not too dissimilar to Bernie Sanders ran on four years ago when you supported him in the Democratic primary four years ago why haven’t you waited to see if he jumps in before declaring your own candidacy I certainly agree with many of the things that Bernie Sanders says many of the things that that Elizabeth Warren says I’m simply having a more expanding conversation it’s like an integrative model of health and healing you need more than external remedies you also have to address the psychological and emotional and spiritual issues that both cause disease and help to ameliorate it when it occurs we need an integrative model of politics the political conversation we have now is so stuck on the externals but that that is that is inadequate we need to talk about the larger panoply of what is actually happening otherwise you do what our political system does you water the leaves of our democracy but you’re not watering the roots and that’s what I’m introducing a conversation that I feel is the only one that is adequate to navigating and transforming it is that what you do as president it is the conversation what you’re promising as president well first of all well first of all the bully pulpit of the presidency is not to be undervalued but even more importantly it is the consciousness of the president that then drives his or her policy decisions both in our domestic policies and in our international policies where our underlying ways in which we are not addressing our deeper humanitarian values and our deeper democratic values our democracy and our capitalism has swerved off course from an ethical center like I believe yes it is the job of the President to name this an idiot we just have a short time and you do have specific proposals and policies and I’d like to get to a couple more of them right now you or a candidate who believes that African Americans should receive reparations for slavery specifically a hundred billion dollars paid out in at a 10-year annual installment of ten billion is this symbolic or do you think this money goes to some practical purpose this is not symbolic at all at the end of the Civil War General Tecumseh Sherman promised to every formerly enslaved persons forty acres and a mule and those forty acres and a mule would have given a formerly enslaved population an opportunity to reintegrate to integrate into free society what happened instead of course was black code laws were passed in the American South which ensured subpar social and political and economic opportunities for the former slave population this was not addressed for a hundred years until the civil rights movement and while the civil rights movement gave Voting Rights Act although that has been chipped away since 2013 and gave a lot of political opportunities that had not been there for the 100 years previous it did not address the fact that we have not yet paid that debt Germany has paid eighty nine billion dollars in reparations to Jewish organizations since World War two and Ronald Reagan signed the American Civil Liberties act by which we paid every surviving member who had been interned during the during the World War two in the Japanese internment camps twenty-two thousand dollarz I believe a hundred billion dollars given to a council that would apply these this money to economic projects and educational projects of renewal for that population is simply a debt to be paid until we pay it we will deal with these issues you were not a novice to politics you’ve been a political activist for years you also ran for Congress people don’t know this in California in 2014 what do you see as your path to victory here for the Democratic nomination do you think you can win first of all Donald Trump is president so this idea of predicting who can win we should throw all of that out the window my strategy is not strategy my strategy is that I seek to speak as deeply articulately and passionately as I can what I see to be the deeper truths confronting our nation challenging our nation to live up to them I’m speaking from the depth of my self to the depth of the American in all of us this is not strategy this the whole strategic mind is part of the corruption of the political system I’m not trying to figure out what to say to get people to vote for me I’m seeking to have the conversation that I believe we need to be having these are very serious times we need to be very serious deep thinkers I’m not trying to get shallow or superficial so people will hear me I’m inviting the American people to get deep with me it’s time for that in order to address these times and to transform them well marianne williamson we appreciate you coming on and having the conversation here you’re in Iowa today and Des Moines you’re headed to South Carolina I know this is a real campaign again you’ve got a campaign manager there’s a website here with a lot of policies we look forward to speaking to you again as the campaign season continues thank you I appreciate your having me one Erica new clues in the attack on a television actor now being investigated as a possible hate crime which Chicago police are people of interest people they say they want to talk to about the alleged racist and homophobic attack an empire actor Jesse Smollett CNN Sarah Seidner is live in Los Angeles this morning for us and with the very latest Sarah good morning good morning you know we’re learning a couple of new things one that he was talking to his manager at the time of the attack and two police have put out pictures they are hoping the public can help them try to identify these two people who they would like to question Chicago police releasing these new images of people they want to question regarding the alleged homophobic and racist attack against Empire actor and singer Jessie Smollett authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying the two individuals who police are calling potential persons of interest police making these pictures public after combing through hundreds of hours of surveillance video and expanding their initial search area for video they have not yet found images of an assault but police say they have found video showing Smollett entering his building with what appears to be a rope around his neck [Music] Smollett is best known for his role in the television series Empire where he plays Jamal a black singer who is gay Smollett in real life is black and gay which may have been the motivation for a possible hate crime against him in Chicago authorities say the Empire actor reported that the crime happened about two in the morning Tuesday when two men got his attention by yelling out racial and homophobic slurs Smollett told police the men then began hitting her in the face and poured an unknown chemical substance on him he added that at some point during the incident one of the offenders wrapped a rope around his neck during a follow-up interview police say Smollett told them something new during the attack the offenders uttered this is Magga country Smollett told CNN he was shaken by the attack his publicist says he is out of the hospital and recovering police are hoping to learn more about who the people on the surveillance video are so far more than a dozen investigators are working this case with the assistance of the FBI now u.s. congressman from Illinois Agra is calling for an immediate and sweeping civil rights investigation and again the FBI is involved in this case but those pictures very hard to see any details you can’t tell the color of the people’s skin and you know that it is freezing in Chicago right now so they’re of course bundled up but are a lot of questions that police are trying to answer trying to figure out just who is behind this and trying to get the public to help them do that designer we thank you for staying on this story so much more still to learn appreciate it new evidence of a Russian attack on the US justice system but with Don Lemon tonight at 10:00 Eastern Virginia’s Democratic governor Ralph Northam is facing a backlash for comments he made on a late-term abortion bill the measure proposed in the virginia legislature would have loosened restrictions on abortions during the third trimester of pregnancy the other pathologist was slammed after he said this if my mother is in labor I can tell you exactly what would happen the infant would be delivered the infant would be kept comfortable the infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother flora Senator Marco Rubio retweeted the governor’s comments adding this I never thought I would see the day America had government officials who openly support legal infanticide a spokesman for Northam tells The Washington Post and Northam was talking about prognosis and medical treatment not ending the life of a delivered baby the Justice Department is weighing Russia stole and spread non-public information about the Muller probe in order to discredit the investigation and despite that alarming headline the president’s focus is aimed at the tactics the FBI used to arrest Roger stone let’s get the bottom line now with CNN political analyst David Gregory David good to see you I mean morning there’s an element of that where you say oh wow look at this headline and this is crazy and this is exactly what we heard in the threat assessment on Tuesday that we should be concerned about that Russia is still meddling and sowing trying to exploit the discord in the country the president is worried about Roger stone it’s really not that surprising though is it well it’s not surprising but you know in this particular case if you read the Daily Caller transcript the president seems like much more of a bystander here reporter is asking him incredibly leading questions essentially say isn’t this outrageous are you concerned about the militarization of your FBI yes I think you made this point earlier John is like you know that’s a really good question I really should think about that I’ll be darned you know because he loves to go along with someone aggressively in his favor and you see that over and over again but I think it doesn’t detract from the larger point you as because it also shows that to him all of world the world is television there is no such thing as print media you should play that question because that question is really important and maybe other people will weigh in on it again it’s a little bit of a side note but I think it’s not the president waking up and saying I’m gonna drive this I think he is happy to agree with anything that would advance you know that question of unfairness about the molar probe and I think his focus on stone for example he’s not commenting on the substance of what he’s charged with he may get to a point where he said yeah these other people were doing bad things and and I didn’t know about it it’s much easier to create doubt about how and why things were done when it gets to oh you got him on lying you gotta find instruction you don’t have there’s no there there there’s no underlying crime that’s what I think he’ll continue to focus on so we have you here for the bottom line one of the big issues in the country right now is will the government shutdown again in like 13 or 14 days we’ve talked to members from both parties who are part of this meeting this gang of 17 trying to hammer out a deal and they both spoke in really soothing tones yes like they’re working very hard to come up with a solution is a reason for hope here David look I think there is and I think if you’re the president whatever penalty he pays for the shutdown in the polling if there’s anything that endures and I’m not sure there will be any lasting blowback against him he has made this issue that is central to his campaign and how he thinks a front burner issue again and he’s got a real opportunity to get some kind of funding for some kind of barrier slash wall slash steel that’s you know slack whatever and I think Democrats have to look at this as an opportunity for a long term deal on dreamers I do think there’s an opportunity for this I don’t know if it’s at the level that he wants it may not be at the level that Democrats want but I don’t think either side I heard Jonathan Martin make this point earlier and we’ve talked about it Democrats have supported a wall there is already a wall there are already barriers they have you know they can’t make this simply a moral issue when they’ve been for this in the past so I think there’s room to negotiate here based on a president who made this argument in a campaign and got elected on it in part David Gregory you know he speaks in soothing tones like these appropriators meeting to fix all this we’ve deemed that the Bob La Raza morning yes happy little clouds David Gregory thank you very much for being with us this morning so you’ve heard some Democrats push Medicare for all dr.
