CNN Inside Politics 1/17/2019 | CNN BREAKING NEWS Today Jan 17, 2019

president’s top lawyer rudy giuliani now says maybe trump campaign aides did communicate or collude with russians but he says it’s no big deal because the candidate himself didn’t plus long-time trump fixer michael cohen tells CNN the boss directed him to rig poles to help generate fake news about Trump’s popularity rigged polls fake news go figure and they’re still sparring over who’s to blame for the partial government shutdown but today the president and the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi United and taking time to pay tribute to four Americans killed yesterday and that suicide bombing in Syria I want to take a moment to express my deepest condolences to the families of the brave American heroes who laid down their lives yesterday in selfless service to our nation sadly this week was marked by the great tragedy of our losing our brave men and women in uniform when it were killed in a terror attack in Syria so very very sad amen to that we begin today with an eye-popping statement and a significant story change from the president’s lead attorney Rudy Giuliani telling CNN there might well have been cooperation or collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia I never said there was no collusion between the campaign or between people in the campaign the United States there is not a single bit of evidence the president United States committed the only crime you could admit here conspired with the Russians to half the DNC now set the faulty spin about the only crime you could commit here faulty spin about the law set that aside for a moment that is a dramatic real-time revision of a trump administration constant that there was no collusion full stop on the president’s twitter feed alone 60 tweets feature the no collusion defense now Rudy Giuliani wants you to ignore everything you’ve seen and heard before and believe this he didn’t say he was already on an issue assisity times the convention he said he didn’t he didn’t say nobody how would you know now you just heard him what he just said requires you to suspend logic and forget that the president’s lawyer himself and the president forget that they ever said this is it still the position of you and your client that there was no collusion with the Russians whatsoever on behalf of the Trump campaign correct there has been no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russians or Trump and Russians no collusion that was then and here we are this is that with me to share their reporting and their insights and PRS Tamara Keith CNN’s Phil Mattingly CNN’s Evan Perez and Wanda summers of The Associated Press let me start with you your reporting is on the investigation not the first time Rudy Giuliani has come out and said forget everything that you have on tape forget everything the president has said forget everything I have said forget everything that has been documented we have a new story why well I think Rudy is trying to do the right thing here for his client which is to try to get some distance between President Trump and candidate Trump and Paul Manafort the chairman of the campaign who it was revealed in the court filings in suit in the last couple of weeks who had been sharing internal poll data with people who are connected to the Russian government according to the special counsel so I think they they were you know based on our own reporting behind the scenes they realized that this is something they need to do they should have probably done this a while ago but I think now is probably better than than ever right but but even just the the comments that Rudy Giuliani made to a Chris Cuomo last night I mean this is like cleanup in aisle Rudy right where he has to come back and fix it again in clarifying it to to Danna Bosch this morning that essentially he says you know I don’t represent the Trump campaign I represent President Trump and that’s really what I was talking about so look I think this is where they needed to get to legally politically it just took a while for them thinking and he he by default he his choice mentioned the DNC hack – we know another area the special counsel is looking into is were there some communications between the president’s Ally Roger stone Roger stones friend conservative author jerome corsi were there some communications with WikiLeaks and Julian Assange we know that’s a subject of inquiry too so I found it interesting that he brought that up because they know a lot more than we know but on the question of the matter for polling he also tried to make the case to Chris Cuomo so Paul Manafort the campaign chairman campaign for President Donald Trump is the nominee he’s not running for mayor he’s running for president United States shares this polling with Russians Paul Manafort knows because if his work have ties to the Kremlin Rudy Giuliani says so what it’s not collusion how is it not because polling data is given to everybody I mean I shouldn’t have given it to them it’s wrong to give it just not giving everybody can’t speak for Paul Manafort of course it is at first of all the most inappropriate the most inaccurate stuff is internal polling data all of it is cooked I’ve been covering campaigns for 32 years I think if my math is correct I don’t know of any campaign because hey guess what I share my polling with the Russians with the French with friendly governments non friendly governments anybody else I think the other I was always told the internal polling data was the correct data and it was the outside polling data that was the wrong I’m making light of this because of the absurdity of what Giuliani said but if you have we don’t know this we cannot connect these dots the special counsel is trying to see if they can be connected if you have internal polling data that says here are strengths we need these people to show up here are weaknesses if these people show up we lose this state and the Russians have that why they have this active internet trolling operation designed to help Trump and her Clinton that’s gold right and I think that was why and even pointed out when this showed up in the court filing kind of sirens went off across the board of like okay this is actual substantive documentation of something trading hands that could have a tangible effect on how somebody would operate if they wanted to mess around with the election I think the difficulty with Rudy Giuliani right now and I think a lot of us heard it last night and thought does he know something’s coming well we’ve seen this before where he looks like he steps in something but in fact what he’s doing is laying the groundwork for something now he told Danny Bash they didn’t know anything in advance but I think the bigger question right now is all right as you always point out they know more than we know the special counsel knows more than everybody is there some effort here to lay the groundwork for something and while regional anna says no I think that’s the big question I particularly given what we’ve seen in the coin that point exhibit a of this is what rudy guiliani does you mention clean-up on aisle Rudy exhibit a and that is that he went out and we all of our head snap back when remember for months and months and months just like no collusion no one in the Trump campaign that’s what the president has said no one in the Trump campaign not just him for months and months and months they said payments to stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal president had nothing to do with any of that and then we’re Julie only one of television and having something to do with paying some stormy Daniels woman 130,000 I mean which is gonna if you don’t decide that on cable television just decide that looking at the laws and then maybe potentially in a courtroom but well yeah and and Michael Cohen the president’s attorney who wasn’t involved in that transaction has pleaded guilty to a campaign finance violations so under the eyes of the law at this point it was against the law the thing to know about Rudy Giuliani is he is part of the president’s legal team he is the public face of the president’s legal team most of the time he’s sort of the the TV lawyer but he’s not doing the nitty-gritty legal work of building the defense he’s doing the public defense and so what you would I take from him coming out is that he is doing he’s making a public relations case he is trying to work the refs ahead of what may be coming to work the refs because one of the bigger questions is there’s whatever Bob bowler decides from a legal perspective there’ll be a political conversation especially now that the Democrats control the house will they go ahead with impeachment will they call up witnesses on all these even if they don’t go ahead with impeachment they can investigate every single one of these questions for the next two years while they’re in power in the house and that’s the those the refs he’s working you’re absolutely right John this is happening not only as there is now an era of divided government with Democrats controlling the house and therefore having the ability to press as many investigations they want this also happens against the backdrop of a presidential campaign in which President Trump is running for re-election in what is expected to be a historically large field of Democrats who will also be able to take what is happening with the Muller investigation whatever we see unfold X and there’s so much to the other folks point that we don’t know quite yet they’ll be able to use that to launch attacks to attack the president’s credibility as we already see polling numbers show that his favorables are slipping even among those within his base how much do we know Evans still moat many of the lawyers who were sharing information with the Trump legal team have stopped do so because mr. gates is cooperating witness now mr. man affords a cooperating witness now although there are questions about that Special Counsel says maybe not do we know we know Roger Stone’s a friend of the president I suspect everything he hears from Special Counsel gets related to team Trump do we know of the how many other lawyers are still doing that I’m just asking the question in the context of what does Rudy Giuliani know that we don’t well I think people like Roger stones or say people like that have been providing information to the president’s lawyers and of course Jared Kushner his and and Donald Trump jr. Jr’s attorneys are also sharing information but I think you’re right I mean what you’re seeing is you know there’s there’s a sort of a closing in of the circle here and what it means is that the president’s lawyers are evermore in the dark because they don’t know what else Muller has he may have intelligence intercepts showing that people in you know on the Russian side we’re talking about what they were hearing from inside the Trump campaign and so these are the types of things that they are completely in the dark about and it’s unnerving it that’s what you’re seeing from Rudy Giuliani because this polling thing was a very big surprise to them and it unnerved them to no end while you see him trying to work the refs I like that term up next for us we’ll keep an eye on that up next the presidents of Kratz and this spoiler alert you probably know this there’s no end in sight House Speaker Nancy Pelosi defending her decision to suggest president Trump reschedule his State of the Union address she says his demands or luxury listen I’m not denying with – are listen let’s get a date when government is open let’s pay the employees maybe he thinks it’s okay not to pay people who do work I don’t and my caucus doesn’t either the president’s insistence is a luxury a country insistent during the world is a luxury the country can no longer afford now the Republicans always say you need the wall they say Pelosi is playing politics by trying to delay or cancel to save the Union address the president just moments ago taking it one step further saying she meaning Pelosi and other radical Democrats as the president calls them have hijacked the party we need strong barriers and walls nothing else is going to work while many Democrats in the House and Senate would like to make a deal speaker Pelosi will not let them negotiate the party has been hijacked by the open borders fringe within the party the radical left becoming the radical Democrats CNN’s Abby Phillip is live for us at the White House Abby when you listen to the speaker listen the president things certainly don’t appear to be getting any closer any progress may be behind the curtain I think you’re exactly right John if you look at that speech from earlier this morning it really gives you a window into president Trump’s state of mind he spent a few minutes talking about the attacks in Syria yesterday but gave a lengthy speech a section of a speech dedicated almost entirely to his desire for a border wall now the president in those comments this morning just like in all the previous days of this 27 days shutdown has not changed his language at all he hasn’t changed his demands and is not moving off of his mark in the sense that we get here at the White House is that really nothing has changed those moderate Democrats came to the White House and met with President Trump which by all accounts was a pretty collegial meeting but there was no progress no breakthroughs happening as a result of that and one added wrinkle to this is the fact that Nancy Pelosi has asked the President to a postpone or perhaps cancel his plans to deliver a State of the Union address on the 29th of January which is in about a week and a half and the White House is still deliberating on how to respond to that it’s been interesting to see them not really respond formally to this which is really a shot across the bow from Nancy Pelosi at the president President Trump hasn’t even mentioned it in his Twitter is Twitter of remarks this morning so what we are hearing from White House aides is that they’re still trying to figure out what to do here should President Trump give his own remarks and some other kind of venue to perhaps further prosecute this case for a border wall but at the end of the day if on the 29th of January the shutdown is still going on it’s clearly a sign that this process is not moving forward in any way shape or form the fact that they are considering some alternative venue for a State of the Union strong thinking what’s fair to say actually at the moment that doesn’t even appear to be a process to be broken there’s not a process to have you feel appreciated live at the White House Michael share the New York Times joins our conversation and and that is what makes this stunning there are some small groups meeting from time to time if you talk to people around the White House they’re people who take phone calls from the White House they say there are some presidential aides calling around saying you know where’s the deal you don’t hear that from the president and you don’t hear that from the speaker at all just about NPR Mehra’s poll out today the question is will something cause somebody to blink and if you’re asking the question will the president blink first if you look at these polling numbers among registered voters his approval rating is down among Republicans it’s down a little bit don’t over exaggerate that but it’s down a little bit about white men no college degrees it’s not a bit white women no college degrees down a bit more significantly pieces of the president’s base it’s one poll although CNN had a poll that had similar numbers to some degree you know don’t go running off to Vegas but if you’re the president this is the beginning of your ramp up to re-election you’re in this government shutdown you’re seeing turmoil in the economy and you see your numbers going down a little bit is that enough to get him to say let’s somehow find an opening here so the other challenge he faces is that he ran for president as a guy who can make the deals he’s the deal maker elect me I’m the one who can make the deals the other thing he ran for president on was building the wall now these things are linked and and he can’t unlink them he can’t get out without making some sort of a deal and and he’s in a really really tough spot there well and and he appears to be recognizing it whether the public rhetoric hasn’t changed with it which i think is true right there hasn’t seem to be any sort of like crack in his public rhetoric but my colleagues at the Times reported that he is in private frustrated and upset that like in fuming and all of the things that we always say about him I think the quote that was attributed to him was he you know we’re getting crushed on this because guess what he’s watching TV and even on Fox News even on the places that he watches this is playing out in a way that isn’t beneficial to him politically and I think he recognizes that and if there’s anything that he cares about it’s what he looks like on TV so but where’s the off-ramp what force convinces one meaning the president or the speaker or both meaning the president speaker to decide we got to try to be grown-ups here and I asked yes there are many issues but immigration as much if not more than any other issue proves to two Americas we live in a Pew ask this question of adults do you favor or not favor US border wall along the southern border 82% of Republicans favorite 6% of Democrats favorite I mean there are two Americas when it comes to this issue which is why the president says he’s fighting for why didn’t speaker Pelosi says she’s fighting for the other I think that’s why you have this game of brinksmanship look if you are a Republican I think you want the president to hold his ground because if he doesn’t and say we’re at a temporary stop the shutdown that would get the 800,000 people in this country who aren’t getting paychecks they’d be getting paid again what incentive then would Democrats who hate the wall who don’t want to see be seen as dealing with this president to cut any sort of deal with them on the other side on the other hand you have Democrats who feel like if they negotiate with a shutdown then they’re opening the door for the president to use this exact same tactic on any number of other issues that he wants to highlight is he’s looking to run for president they think the problem why things are so stuck is there’s no real incentives for anyone and it’s leaving a lot of Americans lives and essential services hanging in the balance and where you work on the hill is there are there any cracks or parent in the sense that I keep saying this I know if a half dozen or so Republicans who have come forward Republican senators that’s not enough it’s enough you have to be probably double that to get the leaders attention and then the leader would have to get the president’s attention but you do have Ron Johnson with Trump a lie most cases Republican of Wisconsin saying right now are you seeing any pressure on the Democrats I think Republicans are getting the lion’s share of the pressure the president accepted the blame so people are happy to give it to him that a reference to the president’s Oval Office meeting with Chuck and Nancy as he calls it where he said I’ll proudly shut down the government in this fight for border security I think the thing that I’ve been struck by is the weeks days then weeks have moved on it’s just how little from the most part when you talk to rank-and-file Republicans they’re feeling this right now I was talking to Republican leadership aides in the house and said look our guys don’t want to move on this they feel far more pain if they cross the president in their districts and anything else you talk about the Senate yes five six there’s a group trying to work unsuccessfully in a gang trying trying to kind of wriggle out of this right now they’re not representative of the broader 53 member Republican Conference and so long as that’s the case leadership isn’t going to change their position leadership not gonna pick up the phone and call the president say look our guys have a problem here we have to move and if that doesn’t occur then what triggers the president one of the most interesting elements I think of the last couple weeks is everybody say all right what’s what the trigger that gets the president what changes the dynamic here because as one of points out the incentives are misaligned right now and there hasn’t been any sign they’ve been lining up anytime soon what people are settling on right now is economic indicators in the market moving in a significant manner might be the one thing that reaches him but even that even when you have the Council of Economic Advisers coming out and saying there’s going to be a pretty significant impact on GDP even that people are unsure of because of the fight the fight he wants and the fight that he continues to believe he has to have and if if he gets if if if I say if he gets to that point he signals he’s willing to take a lot less first board or wall the question is will the House Democrats give him any they’re still right now in the know so we got a ways to go day 27 and Counting up next the president’s former longtime fixer admits trying to fix online polls rigged calls get the irony so the president likes to complain about rigged polls and fake news well now we know he likes to rigged polls to generate fake news former Trump fixer Michael Cohen admitted today as first reported by The Wall Street Journal that he hired a tech company back in 2014 and then again in 2015 to try to rig a pair of online popularity polls in Donald Trump’s favor the hope was they would generate favorable headlines and cable chatter the first to CNBC ranking of top business leaders in the country the other a judge Drudge Report poll of prospective Republican 2016 candidates the cost $50,000 reimbursement to Cohen for quote tech services paid out by the Trump Organization in a statement this morning Cohen saying this to CNN what I did was at the direction and for the sole benefit of Donald J Trump I truly regret my blind loyalty to a man who doesn’t deserve it CNN’s I’m Jay Lee obtained that statement and joins us now live MJ what more can you tell us about this bizarre story it is bizarre indeed and just fascinating because as you said the president loves to complain about rigged polls but apparently doesn’t have such an issue when he’s rigging them for himself here’s a Wall Street Journal story it says that Michael Cohen hired this man John gauger who works for a tech company and is also an employee at Liberty University in Virginia to rig online polls to make Donald Trump look good now in early 2015 the journal says like gauger when to Trump Tower to get his payment of $50,000 from Michael Cohen according to the journal Michael Cohen handed him a Walmart bag full of cash but of only $12,000 12 to 13 thousand dollars the story said instead of the full $50,000 payment now according to the journal even though gauger was only paid this amount of money Michael Cohen then proceeded to in 2017 go to Donald Trump and ask for the $50,000 which Donald Trump proceeded to pay now Michael Cohen tells The Wall Street Journal I should note that the cash payment part of this is not true and this is actually the most sort of bizarre part of the story that he was handed a bag full of cash Michael Cohen says to the journal all monies paid to mr. Gore were by cheque but clearly according to the statement that you just read John he is not denying that this pole rigging part of the story is in fact true and we are going to hear him say this in public in February when Michael Cohen testifies in front of Congress because this is guaranteed now to be a story the lawmakers want to know more about and I just want to quickly add the Liberty University has also given Siena and a statement commenting on gauger calling him an outstanding employee of the university but they are not answering specific questions about what they might have known about this poll reading John okey doke appreciate that there I should know for the record this statement provided to CNN’s Pam Brown not straight – MJ MJ thank you it’s coming their way in some ways this is bizarre and it’s comedy Michael Cohen also asked this tech guy apparently to set up a Twitter account women for Cohen to boost his profile so on the one hand it’s like you can’t make this stuff up and if you brought this script to Hollywood they would laugh you out of the door on the other hand though it is significant because one of the things President Trump has tried to do is coffee boy Michael Cohen essentially say he was one of my lawyers he did some low rate stuff this story reminds us that the president can’t do that that Michael Cohen was his right-hand man his dirty trickster his fixer and that when President Trump was trying to boost himself Michael Cohen was his point guy and I think it also underscores the fact there’s so much that we don’t know and Michael Cohen will be testifying publicly in front of a democratic-controlled Oversight Committee in just a short amount of time and I think everybody thinks your every single day like there’s a new revelation or every other week and it just underscores that there’s a lot more that could come out and there’s a reason why the White House doesn’t necessarily throw there’s going to be a public testimony I would also note I can’t believe MJ left out the idea that there’s apparently a UFC mixed martial artist boxing glove that was given is payment as well which is an interesting tactic maybe that works on your side is no I would say one it’s the testimony that I’m struck by and two is the fact that anybody who covered the campaign for any piece of time it just underscores how kind of off-the-cuff jerry-rigged not necessarily put together in a professional apparatus by kind of a random assortment of people it was particularly in the earliest days and now he’s president and that was president it’s only 40 Democrats running for the nomination or trying to copy it I’m sorry just the hot spot right that the very things that the president has made his mission in life to attack right the idea of of fake news is this is this sort of I mean it’s not like this is should be a huge surprise right but is the thing that his own campaign trafficked in and the the thing that he denies which is the sort of manipulation of social media on behalf of his campaign is again the thing that his campaign was engaged in and I and I and so the you know it’s kind of one more on the can you believe this meter that we’ve been living with for the last you know two and a half years so the not comedy part of this is that an organization a person Donald Trump and the Trump Organization reimbursing Michael Cohen for services that he paid for in order to help the president’s potential campaign that is at the very heart of the Southern District of New York’s case against Michael Cohen related to stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal these are all of a piece right that they blatantly ignored the rules and the laws and just spent their money willy-nilly and to your point I don’t think it’ll be just once I think Michael Cohen’s gonna have several trips up to Capitol Hill this is Elijah Cummings who’s the chairman of the Oversight Committee who’s been listening to the president and the president says Michael Cohen’s a liar he’s also dropped innuendo about their stuff about his in-laws out there to be found Elijah coming says mr. president stop it well we cannot get information because people feel intimidated that’s a problem that’s a major problem we just had some concerns with regards to some of the statements that the president made about in-laws of mr. Cohen and we just want to make sure that the president was just reminded of what the law is it tells you two things number one we live in a new Washington there is one branch of Congress that is saying no and giving other advice or giving other warnings to the president that didn’t exist until this month and number two they can call witnesses and mr. Cohen will be just one of them absolutely and I think his testimony will be one of the clearest public indications we have as to what we can expect moving forward is these investigations and there will likely be many of them and I agree with you even Phil that this will not be Michael Cohen’s only trip to the hill but what could unfold this also comes as the undercurrent as we know as CNN and the journal and others have reported the Michael Cohen is very concerned you know about the impact that all this will have on his family and so he’s and that’s not new information but as he’s been very forthright about that as he’s opening up and likely to tell congressional officials more what all right as we go to break here up next to congressman just announced he’s resigning I’ll bring the detail topic our political radar today get ready for the next campaign Senator Chuck Schumer already laying plans try to pick off a Republican held Senate seat in 2020 Schumer meeting last night with Arizona congressman Ruben Gallego congressional campaign source says CNN pitched the congressman Schumer pitched the congressman on challenging senator Martha McSally Schumer according to the source has also had similar conversations with astronaut Mark Kelly and with Grant woods a Republican turned Democrat who once served on the late Senator John McCain’s staff Pennsylvania Republican Tom Marino says he’s leaving Congress he announced his resignation a bit earlier today saying he’s going to take a job now in the private sector Moreno has served in Congress since 2011 his last day will be next week and a top Democrat in the Massachusetts State House is denying allegations of groping a fellow lawmaker the Boston Globe reports representative paul McMurtry allegedly grabbed a backside of an incoming legislator at an orientation cocktail hour last month McMurtry telling the globe he is innocent and he says he welcomes an investigation when we come back president Trump’s speech at the Pentagon was meant to unveil the country’s missile defense strategy but we learned it’s got some other things on his mind he stated goal for making the trip across the Potomac River to outline the new US military defense strategy including a new take on what the administration has come to the conclusion is an urgent need to upgrade United States missile defense the President did talk a bit about that but clearly in his only public statements today so far against other things on his mind including the government shut down the border standoff and NATO countries and paying their dues without a strong border America’s defenseless vulnerable and unprotected I also want to thank the military for helping us out during the big caravan period but now you have more caravans forming and they were on the way up we protect all of these wealthy countries which I’m very honored to do but many of them are so wealthy they can easily pay us the cost of this protection we’re gonna be with NATO 100% but as I told the countries you have to step up you have to pay it is still two years in this week fascinating to me to watch him in these settings where you see when he’s reading the prompter because he’s looking from side to side to read the prompter and then you see there where he’s just riffing and saying what he wants he talking about what he wants to talk well and what’s the thread through all of those things that he talks about it’s things that have been on TV and things that have been in the media if things have been written about it right so The Times had a story about the about NATO and his his desire to pull out a NATO the wall is all over television the caravans are being you know documented on Fox I mean this is what drives him it’s not briefings that and and and and administration people who try to put him in these settings where they where they say to him this is missile defense sir this is you know this is what you should talk about it doesn’t work I mean it works briefly for depleting moments and then he moves on to what what he wants to talk about which which is potentially good for him it’s a commander in chief moment and to the press credit he did pay tribute and voices condolences to the four Americans tragically killed yesterday in Syria at the top of the speech we didn’t hear from him yesterday on that sub J so it was very important and doing it to Pentagon very appropriate but then it’s a commander in chief moment they wanted to talk about what the Pentagon is concluded is an urgent need to upgrade missile defense because of North Korea because of China because of Russia other some in the administration would argue because of Iran as well good for the president and yet he wants to digress from time to time because because he’s the president and he can look I believe the third time in his presidency that Trump has gone to the Pentagon and in these comments you really get a sense of these unscripted ones of where his mindset really is the things that are on his mind I think Michaels absolutely right that a lot of that is fueled by TV but also Tamara made this point about Rudy Giuliani earlier this is a president who is also making a PR case to the American people while we have the standoff over the wall over some of his priorities that Democrats who now have control of the house do not agree with he’s making the case that his ideas are right he’s making it directly to the American people who are seeing this on CNN’s Erin else it’s a great point because this is how he works that’s the fight of the moment not that missile defense is unimportant and not that it’s not important for the president but his instinct is the fight of the moment is the wall that’s what I’m gonna talk about and I interviewed last week Sam Nunn Berg who was this early campaign adviser and he talked about the idea that the campaign speeches were the Trump variety show and there were things that he would always come back to things that you could guarantee that he would come back to and you know talking about the wall complaining about NATO these are things that he will always come back to and you know last week he was speaking or maybe was earlier this week he was speaking to the farm the farm Bureau organization he talked about the wall extensively I’m pretty sure he had a script that was mostly about agricultural related issues it is who he is one of the things people on Capitol Hill and people around the country are waiting is Wilda president what more will he say about Syria policy not just about the tragedy that happened but the tragedy happened a couple weeks after he said first I want to get the troops out immediately and he said no I’m not gonna rush this listen to Rand Paul who has the president’s ear on foreign policy issues and Rand Paul is a bring American boots home yesterday kind of guy listen he wants to be different than most presidents who say we’re gonna go to war but we’re never going to win we’re never going to come to those who say and Lindsey Graham frankly is just wrong on this but for those who say if we leave they’ll reorganize they’ve been killing each other for a thousand years over there we’ve killed 99 percent of Isis is there a remnant over there yes can they not kill one percent when they not do their job this this is an interesting debate at the moment and one of the questions is well what happened yesterday you know the generals will say mr. president this is proof we need a little more time others will say to Rand Paul’s point they’ve been fighting each other forever forever and they’ve troops have been there for years not our job anymore yes actually this is a most fascinating debate in Washington right now on the tug of war behind the scenes at the White House Rand Paul wasn’t the only one over there Senator Marco Rubio was over there sooner Joni Ernst was over there people who are probably more hawkish and their perspective particularly serious enterance served and I think continues to still serve in the military and who is going to win this fight of where the president is instinctually and has been for a long period of time and talked about on the campaign extricated US forces from conflicts overseas versus not just where Republican senators are and traditional Republican ideology is on this issue but also a lot of the presidents top advisors are on this issue and in the tug-of-war the battle back and forth the lobbying house senators use television House senators use the phone house senators use in-person meetings to try and get their way on this issue you talked about the tragic deaths in the attack yesterday in Syria both sides are using that as an example as to why their perspective should win and so how this ends up or whether there’s some kind of muddled middle ground here is going to be really interesting to keep an eye on because this is something Republicans in the Senate care more about than just about anything right now and are keeping a very close eye on the worst thing would be a muddled
